Rising gradually to more than 4 km above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth. It's long flanks descend to the sea floor by another 5 km and sea floor is depressed by Mauna Loa great mass another 8 km. This makes the volcano summit about 17 km (56,000 ft) above it's space. Mauna Loa amounts to about 85% of all the other Hawaiin islands combined.
Mauna Loa is among Earth's most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since it's first well-documented historical eruptions in 1843. It's most recent eruption was in 1984.
